Q1. 東京の街でお気に入りの場所はどこですか?
What is your favorite place in Tokyo?

Narrow alleys of the city, unfamiliar places that I don't have much connection.
I enjoy imagining myself living there while strolling through unfamiliar homes and unknown slopes.

Q2. 海外の都市でお気に入りの場所はどこですか?
What is your favorite place in a foreign city?

Berlin. It gives me a sense of distance no matter where I am.

Q3. 海外の人たちに日本の映画を5本勧めるとしたら、『PERFECT DAYS』以外に何を勧めますか?
If you were to recommend five Japanese films to people overseas, aside from "PERFECT DAYS," what would you suggest?

"Human Evaporation" by Imamura Shohei (1967)
"Musuko (Son; family) " by Yoji Yamada (1991)
"Typhoon Club" by Shinji Sōmai (1985)

Q4. 過去のインタビューに学生の頃にヴィム・ヴェンダース監督の『都会のアリス』を観てはまったとありましたが、作品のどういうところにいちばん夢中になりましたか?
In a past interview, you mentioned that you became fascinated with Wim Wenders' "Alice in the Cities" during your student days. What aspect of the film captivated you the most?

The presence of "time" within the film, which felt entirely distinct from the narrative. I distinctly remember being amazed by the richness of black-and-white cinema at that time.

Q5. SF小説『グレープフルーツムーン』にトム・ウェイツの曲が登場しますが、このSF小説はどんなことからアイディアが生まれて書き上げましたか?
In the science fiction novel "Grapefruit Moon," Tom Waits' music makes an appearance. What inspired you to create this science fiction story?

I wanted to create a setting that could blend imagination and experience. I also wanted to depict a journey, which led to the story of a young man traveling through space, akin to a cosmic version of “Midnight Express” by Kotaro Sawaki (Although I'm not sure if I was able to write it that way.) I included Tom Waits because I used to listen to his music a lot during high school, and I still feel the scent of those youthful days.

Q6. 一日の中で何をしている時がアイディアが生まれたり創造性が膨らみますか?
When during the day do you find that ideas come to you or your creativity blossoms?

When I'm feeling cornered.
Basically, I always doubt my ideas, seeing them as perpetually improvable and immature. Since there should always be room for improvement, I diligently verify and continue to create them. To me, what most people might consider a "Eureka moment" is more like finding a point of entry that I can be bothered with for a long time.

Q7. あなたの人生で最も印象に残っている予期せぬ偶然は何ですか?
What is the most memorable unexpected coincidence in your life?

I tend to think that most things in life happen as unexpected coincidences. When I was creating the screenplay for "PERFECT DAYS," after naming the protagonist "Hirayama," I realized it was the same name as the character played by Chishu Ryu in Yasujiro Ozu's "Tokyo Story." I had talked about Ozu's films countless times before that, so it was a surprising connection. Wenders seemed to have known it from the beginning, though.

Q8. いちばん長く持っている服やアクセサリーは何ですか?
What is an item of clothing or an item of accessories you’ve had the longest?

underwear that I wear for important occasions. They are quite worn out now, but I can't bring myself to part with them.

Q9. 長い旅行に出るとして、3冊しか本を持っていけないとしたら、何を持って行きますか?
If you were going on a long trip and could only take three books with you, what would you take?

If you were to spend time with Hirayama-san, what do you think you would do together?

I would silently take photographs by his side.

Screenplay writer and producer of "PERFECT DAYS," directed by Wim Wenders. Creative Director at Dentsu, novelist. He has worked on numerous advertising campaigns such as JR East’s “Get Back, Tohoku” and has received numerous awards both domestically and internationally, including Japan’s Creator of the Year twice. His activities span a wide range of fields, and his published work includes the novel “Auto Reverse” (Chuokoron-Shinsha), SF novel "Grapefruit Moon" (Chuokoron-Shinsha), novels “Harukakakera” (Chuokoron-Shinsha), the picture book “Makkuro” (Kodansha), which is highly acclaimed overseas, and “Techniques of Expression” (Chuko Bunko).
